SUPPORT
Few of us need assistance to perform some of our daily routines. Assistance can range from helping to do few chores
to looking after for 24 hours. State and NGO provide the support in developed countries. Area of help needed can be broadly
grouped into following divisions. It is of utmost importance to create awareness among the public so that the illness can be identified
at an early stage and the necessary specialised help or treatment can be provided.
In the past especially in developing countries, it was common to keep these people housebound and in few cases they kept locked in a room.
It has changed now. Physical disability is now acknowledged and there are institutions capable of handling these disabilities.
But it is different when it comes to other disabilities. Only few institutions are availabe. Only few medical experts are available and
that also only in cities. There are no schools for children with learning difficulties and so on. Social stigma is also associated
with this and more prevalent in villages. Nowadays words like crippled, blind, deaf, mad are not considered polite and instead disabled,
visually impaired, hearing impaired, learning difficulty, mentally handicapped are used.
